This article provides an in depth computer use guide for eye health specifically curated for you.
Protect Your Eyes and Your Posture
In an era where we spend 8+ hours a day behind a screen, your workspace setup usually determines your long-term health. Poor ergonomics may lead to more than just back pain; they are a leading cause of Digital Eye Strain.
At Ottico Eyecare, we want to ensure your "digital life" is as healthy as possible. We have made available these four expert tips to transform your office into a vision-friendly sanctuary.
Perfect Your Seating Position
Your chair is the foundation of your productivity. To avoid spinal fatigue and shoulder tension the following is recommended:
- Spine Support: Sit all the way back in your chair. Ensure your chair provides firm lower back (lumbar) support.
- Armrests: Keep armrests close to your body so your shoulders remain relaxed.
- Leg Position: Ensure your chair height allows your feet to reach the floor comfortably. Avoid folding your legs behind the chair base, as this restricts circulation.
Optimize Keyboard and Mouse Placement
Wrist health is directly linked to how you position your hands. Experts all over recommend the following;
- Level Alignment: Your keyboard and mouse should be on the same level as your forearms.
- Relaxed Reach: You should not have to lift your arms off the armrests to reach your keys.
- Flat Wrists: Keep the keyboard height low enough to maintain a neutral wrist angle. For laptop users, we highly recommend using an external keyboard and a mouse rest to prevent repetitive strain.
Strategic Monitor Positioning
Where you place your screen dictates how hard your eye muscles have to work. To ensure that you do not experience further strain we advise;
- The Angle: Position your monitor straight ahead, tilted back by about 15°.
- The Height: The center of the monitor should be at least 8 inches below your eye level. This reduces the surface area of the eye exposed to air, preventing dryness.
- The Distance: Maintain at least 60 cm of distance from the screen.
- Font Size: A good rule of thumb is that your font size should be three times the size of the smallest text you can read at that distance.
Lighting and Vision Habits
Lighting is the secret ingredient to reducing glare and headaches. Our current lifestyles sometimes or in most cases will pose a challenge to your eye health. It is very important to ensure we remain productive in our day to day, we have to factor these measure below;
- Indirect Lighting: This is best for desktop work. It minimizes harsh reflections on the screen.
- Window Placement: Never place your monitor directly in front of or behind a window. To stop glare, angle the monitor away from overhead lights and drape windows fully while working.
- The 20-20-20 Rule: To prevent your eye muscles from locking, look away from your screen every 20 minutes at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Blink Frequently: We blink 60% less when looking at screens. Make a conscious effort to blink at least 15 times per minute to keep your eyes lubricated
Does Your Workspace Still Feel "Heavy" on Your Eyes?
Even with a perfect setup, your eyes might need extra support. The right pair of lenses and proper eye check up with a qualified practitioner is highly advised. At Ottico Eyecare, we provide specialized Computer Vision Exams and Blue Light Blocking Lenses designed specifically for high-intensity digital screen users and will have a uv filtering to the recommended FDA standards of up 420 wave length.
