What to expect

Your contact lens fitting,
step by step

A contact lens fitting is a separate appointment from your eye test. Here's exactly what happens when you come in.

01

Eye test & prescription

If you don't have a current prescription, we start with a full eye examination. Contact lens and spectacle prescriptions are slightly different, so we measure both.

02

Corneal assessment

We measure the curvature of your cornea to determine the correct lens size and base curve. This ensures the lens sits correctly on your eye without causing pressure or movement.

03

Trial lens fitting

You'll try a pair of trial lenses. We check the fit using a slit lamp, assess comfort, and confirm your vision is clear. Most patients leave with lenses the same day.

04

Handling & care training

We teach you exactly how to insert, remove, and care for your lenses safely. First-time wearers get as much time as they need — we won't rush you.

Why Ottico Eyecare

Honest advice.
The right fit.

We won't fit you with lenses that aren't right for your eyes — even if they're cheaper.

Clinically led fittings

Every fitting is done by a qualified optician — not a salesperson. We assess your tear film, corneal health, and lens movement before prescribing.

All brands available

We stock lenses from leading international brands. If a specific lens works better for your eyes, we'll source it — we're not tied to a single supplier.

Closest to Ruaka & Runda

Our Gachie practice is the most convenient full-service optical shop for patients in Ruaka, Runda, Nyari, Gigiri, and Kitusuru.

Walk-ins welcome

No appointment needed — walk in any weekday or Saturday. For complex fittings (RGP, keratoconus), booking ahead is recommended.

Important notice

Coloured lenses without a fitting can seriously damage your eyes

Coloured contact lenses sold in beauty shops, market stalls, or online without a prescription are medical devices being used without clinical oversight. They can cause corneal abrasions, infections, and — in serious cases — permanent vision loss. Always get your lenses from a registered optician.

  • Coloured lenses are a medical device — not a fashion accessory
  • A fitting checks that the lens diameter matches your cornea
  • We prescribe plano (zero power) coloured lenses too — no prescription needed
  • Our lenses come from regulated manufacturers with safety certification
  • Fitting takes under 30 minutes — walk in today
Common questions

Everything you need to know

Questions about contact lenses? Here are the ones we hear most often.

Do I need a fitting before buying contact lenses? +
Yes. A contact lens fitting is a separate appointment from your eye test. We measure your cornea, assess your tear film, and trial the lenses to make sure they fit safely and comfortably before prescribing. This protects your eyes and ensures you get the right lens type for your lifestyle.
Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism? +
Absolutely. Toric contact lenses are designed specifically for astigmatism. We offer both soft toric (daily and monthly) and hard RGP toric lenses. The right option depends on the degree of your astigmatism and how you plan to wear them.
What are hard / RGP lenses and who are they for? +
Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses are made from a firm, oxygen-permeable material that holds its shape on the eye — giving sharper vision than soft lenses in many cases. They are more durable (lasting 1–2 years), healthier for long-term wear, and are particularly recommended for keratoconus, high astigmatism, and patients who've struggled with soft lenses. There is a short adaptation period of 1–2 weeks.
I'm over 40 and need reading glasses. Can I still wear contact lenses? +
Yes. Multifocal contact lenses correct both near and distance vision in a single lens, much like progressive spectacle lenses. They are available in both daily and monthly wear options. Most patients adapt well within a few days.
Are coloured contact lenses safe? +
Yes, when properly fitted and from a reputable manufacturer. The danger comes from buying coloured lenses without a fitting — from beauty shops, market stalls, or unregulated online sellers. These lenses may not match your corneal diameter, restricting oxygen and causing serious damage. At Ottico Eyecare, all coloured lenses are properly fitted and sourced from certified suppliers.
How long does a contact lens fitting take? +
A standard contact lens fitting takes around 30–45 minutes. RGP and specialist lens fittings may take a little longer. Most patients leave with their first pair of lenses on the day of the fitting. Walk-ins are welcome, though booking ahead means you won't wait.
