Do night driving glasses work?

Why night driving feels harder than it used to

Reading a number plate or spotting a pedestrian depends on an accurate prescription and healthy eyes. No coating or tint makes your vision sharper.

Reflections: light bouncing off your lenses
An uncoated lens reflects roughly 8% of light off its two surfaces. A good anti-reflective coating cuts that to around 1%, so you see fewer ghost images and slightly more light gets through.

Lenses we do not recommend for driving at night
You will find these sold as "night vision" or "anti-glare driving glasses" online and in Nairobi shops. At night, your eyes need every bit of light they can get.
Yellow-tinted "night driving" lenses
They can make the scene feel brighter, but a controlled driving-simulator study found they did not help drivers spot pedestrians faster, with or without oncoming headlights. Feeling that you see better when you do not can make you drive with less caution.
Polarized and other sunglass lenses
Optical standards advise that lenses letting through less than 75% of light are not suitable for driving at dusk or at night. Prescription sunglasses are excellent for bright daytime driving, not after dark.
If you wear progressive lenses
Drivers over 40 often need to see the road, the dashboard and a phone through one pair. Progressive lenses can do this, but for night driving the basics matter more than the brand: an up-to-date distance prescription, accurate fitting height, a frame that does not slip, and an anti-reflective coating.

Simple habits that help after dark
Keep your glasses clean with a microfibre cloth, and replace lenses that are badly scratched. Clean the windscreen inside and out, as a film on the inside scatters headlight glare. When a car approaches with bright lights, look towards the left edge of your lane instead of straight into the beam. Make sure your own headlights are clean and properly aimed. On long drives, take breaks and blink often if your eyes feel dry.
